Huggable Amigurumi Teddy Bears

I crocheted these teddies for my two sons, Kameron and Korey, and daughter, Kayleigh. Amigurumi comes from Japan and means crocheted or knitted stuffed toy. I made up the pattern as I went along, even for the clothes.

Kameron’s Teddy Bear Story

Kameron chose the yarn that was the closest to green. As he is very particular, his teddy had to have shorts not trousers and a watch.  These are very trademark things for Kameron because he too is always in shorts (all year round) and wears a watch. Also, the jacket had to have a hood.

Korey’s Teddy Bear Story

Korey chose a white yarn and had trousers with the jacket.

Kayleigh’s Teddy Bear Story

As Kayleigh is very girly, the yarn for the teddy was pink and I made it as a Ballerina. For the clothes, I made a tutu and a wrap cardigan, with a bag to put it all in.

The finished size of the teddy bears from top of ears to tip of toes is approx. 16″ (40.6cm).

For the teddy itself I worked UK Double Crochet/dc [US Single Crochet/sc], working in the round. I worked the head, neck and body all in one and made the arms, legs and ears separately. For Kameron’s teddy, I worked UK Treble Crochet/tr [US Double Crochet/dc] in the Back Loop Only/BLO. For Korey’s teddy, I worked the wattle stitch on the jacket, which is a pattern comprised of UK dc, ch 1, tr [US sc, ch 1, dc] all into a ch space. The trousers were worked in UK dc [US sc]. For Kayleigh’s teddy, I worked the tutu in UK tr [US dc] and I got the ripple effect by crocheting increases on each round. The cardigan was also UK tr [US dc] in BLO, with a UK dc [US sc] edging. As you can also see, for the tutu I used Kayleigh’s two favourite things in one yarn - Pink & Glitter!

Teddy Yarn

Peter Pan Cupcake (shades - Spearmint 822, White 800, Rainbow Dust 810).

4 (each colour) x 50g (1.75oz/98yds/90m) balls.

Weight category: UK DK [US 3/Light worsted, DK].

Tension/gauge: 19 stitches x 26 rows = 4″ (10cm) on size 3.75mm/UK 3.75mm [US F/5] - 4.50mm/UK 7 [US 7] hook.

The crochet hook I used was a 4 mm/UK 8 [US G/6].

I would give the Peter Pan Cupcake yarn a 3 out of 5 for the following reasons:-

- It was slightly difficult to work with because you can’t see the stitches;

- There is only a small choice of colours available;

- The feel of it is brilliantly soft and cuddly;

- The cost, however, is, expensive - I paid between £1.80 and £2.85 per 50g ball;

- Would I use this yarn again? YES, DEFINITELY.

Teddy Bear’s Clothes Yarn

Jackets/Trousers/Shorts/Watch

Red Heart Super Saver (shade - Camouflage E300 0971).

2 x 141g (5oz/236yds/215m) skeins.

Weight category: UK Aran [US 4/Medium, worsted].

Tension/gauge: 12dc [US sc] x 15 rows = 4 (10cm) on size 5.5mm/UK 5 [US I/9] hook.

The crochet hook I used was a 5.5 mm/UK 5 [US I/9] hook.

I would give the Red Heart Super Saver yarn a 4 out of 5 for the following reasons:-

- It was extremely easy to work with;

- There is a large choice of colours available;

- The feel of it is soft;

- The amount on the skein is amazing as it is 141g (5oz);

- At the time I purchased the yarn, it wasn't available in the UK, so I sourced it from Amazon.co.uk and I had to wait over a month for it to arrive but the postage was free!

- The label instructions are really specific making it easier to use on specific projects;

- The cost, however, is, expensive - I paid about £5.99 per skein;

- Would I use this yarn again? YES, I think it is much cheaper and easier to obtain now, typical!

Wrap Cardigan/Bag/Tutu

Patons Diploma Gold DK (shade - Cream 6142).

1 x 50g (1.75oz/131yds/120m) balls.

Weight category: UK DK [US 3/Light worsted, DK].

Tension/gauge: 22 stitches x 30 rows = 4″ (10cm) on size 4mm/UK 8 [US G/6] hook.

The crochet hook I used was a 4mm/UK 8 [US G/6] hook.

I would give the Patons Diploma Gold DK yarn a 3 out of 5 for the following reasons:-

- It was extremely easy to work with;

- There is a reasonable choice of colours available but this is becoming a bit limited and availability is currently lacking somewhat;

- The feel of it is really soft;

- The amount on the ball is only 50g (1.75oz) but you get a lot out of it;

- The cost, however, is expensive - I paid about £2 per 50g ball and this was on sale, standard price is approx. £3.15;

- Would I use this yarn again? YES.

The yarn for the tutu was a random unlabelled ball from a sale basket at my local fabric shop, so I do not know what brand or weight it was.

I also used toy stuffing, which I purchased from a fabric shop.  I also used an oddment of aqua yarn for the eyes, nose and mouth.

I hope this brings you creative joy and inspires you to start your own yarn-tastic journey.
